Psalm 50:1-2 (NIV), Psalm 50:7-12 (NIV), Psalm 50:14-16 (NIV), Psalm 50:21-23 (NIV), Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)
It can be all too easy to go to Church & to worship out of duty – doing all the right things, enjoying even the presence of God but somehow missing the personal encounter that expresses itself from a thankful and greatful heart.
As I consider this psalm I notice three things to help us keep our focus on Father God that stop us merely going through the motions:
1/ keep God in perspective (v1-5) He shines forth into your life! He’s big, he’s really big and you’re really small – yet He desires to know you! So don’t behave as if Father God is on your level! (v21) Respect!
2/ keep a heart of thanks (v14) a danger of going through the motions is ‘life in automatic’ doing things cause we’ve done it this way forever with the likely scenerio we miss the direction He wants to take us! Being thankful daily comes with a promise! You will find salvation! (v23)
3/ keep holy – your lifestyle matters to God! (v5) the dangers of living in automatic mode is the world can take over and we do things that are contrary to the Christian life! Heart check – how am I living today to bring joy to God’s heart?
Stop! Take sometime today to give thanks to God! Say sorry for going through the motions and living the Christian life on automatic. Make a fresh committment today to Father God to live daily seeking to bring joy to His heart! As Paul says in Romans, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind… So that you can test and approve his will” (Ro. 12:1-2)
