It’s not so often a movie is released in the cinema which has such a profound impact on our time! I had the chance to attend a press preview for this new movie. I walked out with more than just one tear in my eye!
So watching this movie, Bonhoeffer, what were some of my first impressions:
At the start, Germany witnessed the rise of a seemingly unknown new Chancellor coming to power. Hitler, with his slogan to “Make Germany Great again,” took over with his far-right politics. He held the country hostage from the inside out! Yet, for much of the Germans public who couldn’t believe what was happening to their country.

In the beginning, they thought it was like a passing fad that would fade away. This comes across in the movie early on. History tells us different. How we are influenced through our early life impacts who we are in later life. This movie helps highlight the influences on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life. It shows influences from his early family life and his younger brother. Walter’s imaginary Strawberry Power is introduced. I love that part of the story. It shows ordinary family life. It also highlights the important relationship Dietrich Bonhoeffer had with his family!
Bonhoeffer was shaped by several influences. One was his visits to the USA. Another was his time at the Bible seminary. He was also influenced by Gospel music, from its style to its preaching. God’s word deeply touched his heart. He was a natural communicator. He actively opposed the Nazi regime back in Germany. We see too just how the regime attempted a take-over of the national church (Lutheran). They wanted to proclaim to the nation that God was on their side. Yet, nothing could be further from the truth. A few faithful men stood up to this. Well, you’ll see the outcome when you watch the movie. It shows how it affected the resistance movement from within Germany and the influences of the outside world.
I did get to talk to one of the cast. Muiris Crowley played Hoble, a lead officer in the Nazi regime. He talked of just how much the film impacted his own outlook from within Germany during this period. It also speaks to us today as we consider the rise of ‘far right’ political influence in our world. Though I can’t help but feel if only we listen because otherwise History Repeats itself ’cause no one listens!
Finally, this is a must watch movie. It is as relevant to our time today as it was back in the mid 1900’s! Watch it and I am sure you will see. You won’t fail to leave the cinema without this movie affecting you in some way!
After the movie…
Find a near by coffee shop, and chat about the movie together — how did it impact you?
I’ve left some of my own thoughts for you below to consider. To the right, there are some other quotes from the movie.

Theological refection – small group discussion
- How did the influences in Bonhoeffer’s life inspire him? How did they encourage him in later years to stand up for what is right? What are some of the life’s past influences in your life that shape you today? How?
- There are a couple of quotes that got my attention. Firstly, “hate comes in every colour you just haven’t realised it yet.” Is this still true today? In what ways and what is God’s answer?
- Another quote relates to the mission God is calling you to. It means getting dirty hands. Bonhoeffer and a small group resisted. Bonhoeffer said, “This will take dirty hands, and it’s all I have to offer.” Considering God’s call on your life? Are you willing to get your hands dirty? In what ways might ‘dirty hands’ be described as a Disciple of Christ in this context?
- Lastly, here’s a clip to watch. What does it take to stand up to injustice? How do we confront it when it comes from the top?
