4 Look, I am ready to build a temple to honor the LORD my God and to dedicate it to him in order to burn fragrant incense before him, to set out the bread that is regularly displayed, and to offer burnt sacrifices each morning and evening, and on Sabbaths, new moon festivals, and at other times appointed by the LORD our God. This is something Israel must do on a permanent basis. 5 I will build a great temple, for our God is greater than all gods. 6 Of course, who can really build a temple for him, since the sky and the highest heavens cannot contain him? Who am I that I should build him a temple! It will really be only a place to offer sacrifices before him. (2 Chronicles 2:4-6 NET)
Imagine King Solomon undertaking the task to build the temple. He gathered skilled labour from within Israel and outside. What a huge task and massive amount of people employed, 153,600 in all!
The temple built to honor the God and be a presence to His people that He inhabits – the place where through the priests people come with their own dedications and sacrifices.
Was it enough? Would the people continue this? Well we see from the biblical history the answer is No!
I’m pretty sure that King Solomon kinda knew this too, (well, God did give him a tonne of wisdom) see v. 5 & 6; “I will build a great temple, for our God is greater than all gods. Of course, who can really build a temple for him, since the sky and the highest heavens cannot contain him? Who am I that I should build him a temple!” Solomon goes on to say the purpose of the temple.
Yet its true, the temple just a shadow of what’s to come!
In Christ, Jesus talks about the temple of the Holy Spirit is our bodies as He lives in us. It is no longer a distant place in a far of land to enter into the presence of God, but today we can know that presence!
I’ve been considering this just this week, as the Church – God’s temple, is people joined together ushering in the presence of God that His Kingdom may come on earth as it is in heaven. Jesus Let your kingdom come!
Today I need to ask myself, as someone where the Holy Spirit lives in me, how am I honouring Father God. In my words, my skills, my witness – let today be a day where all of me honours the Lord and points people to Him!
