The life of a believer is full of daily choices. Paul writes to the Colossians to:
‘Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. ‘ Colossians 3:2
This very statement implies everyday we are faced with a choice. Do I look at my circumstances in the light of what my flesh desires or my own inadequacy? Instead look up.
A worker wears appropriate clothing for a job. The wrong clothing will restrict what you can or can’t do! Imagine working on a building site wearing office suit!
‘ Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, ‘ Colossians 3:12
We are told to put on the right clothes to live for Jesus. Why? Because you are chosen, dearly loved and holy and wearing on the outside (fruit) compassion, kindness, humility etc brings honour and joy to the heart of God!
It’s your new clothes. Though, remember, don’t be surprised at ridicule – remember Joseph and how Jacob have him a new coat which his brothers were envious? In the same way your new self will make others look on with contempt whilst still others will look and see your good deeds and will be pointed towards Jesus.
‘and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. ‘
So dress up! Live daily in these new clothes we put and is something we have to grow into as we choose daily to live for Christ! Yes, we mess up and get a stain but remember, it’s the blood of Jesus that makes you clean again. Putting on the new self starts from the inside before it shows on the outside.
‘ But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness. ‘ 1 John 1:9
