God’s character: ‘Slow to Anger’

“to the one who remembered us when we were down, for his loyal love endures,”

Psalms‬ ‭136:23‬ ‭NET‬‬

God is faithful & patient with us. The weight of our failings shows us just how much we need His grace!

Let’s not forget sin is sin. It pains and separates us from knowing God as our Father. Yet get this! His judgement and righteous anger is slow – i actually think we don’t see God’s anger towards us.

“‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in loyal love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children until the third and fourth generations.’”

Numbers‬ ‭14:18‬ ‭NET‬‬

What slow to anger is not —

  • A hot head with anger slowly rising – like that cartoon picture of a character slowly getting angry.
  • It is not forgetful of our transgressions either.

What slow to anger is…

  • A picture of God’s absolute loyalty, faithfulness and devotion to his people. Let me add patient loyalty, it’s an infinite amount of grace towards you and me!
  • The guilty are still guilty, the enemy is still the enemy – yet God in his infinite wisdom snatches us away from that guilt, from the clutches of the enemy. Consider the Lord’s Prayer – ‘lead me not into temptation’ & ‘deliver me from my enemies’ in how the Lord taught us to pray to God!

Never under estimate God’s loyal and faithful love to you! It is steeped in absolute grace and patience! To such an extent that the Lord in Matthew 6 invites us to regularly, daily ask God to keep us away from temptations and the evil schemes of Satan, because giving into those things gives the enemy a way in to disrupt our lives.

Maybe right now you are feeling disrupted in your life? Then I pray for this revelation to move into your heart: firstly know this: God is not mad or angry at you!!! His Grace is abundantly for you! He is with you right now! He sees you…

The answer is just to be honest with the God, on your knees before the cross of Christ, it is only through knowing forgiveness at the foot of the cross do we confess, repent and receive Holy Spirit’s help to move forward. Let him in your life, so that you will experience the abounding love of the Father’s loyal love! Sins forgiven. The way is clear.

To conclude in prayer, that in His strength and daily in our prayers, we continue to ask God with the prayer Jesus taught us in Matthew 6 ‘let your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven… and Lord start with me today!’
