““So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”Matthew 6:28-30
So often we worry about things instead we turn that worry into self-sufficiency! Look at the comparison here, between the lillie’s/grass of the field which grow all on their own, naturally.
So let’s, briefly, compare that with Solomon; in all his wealth, which was all provided for him!
Yet I wonder if the picture here, to consider, is that of when we worry might be because Solomon perhaps trusted in his own wealth and self-sufficiency.
Let’s consider how the scripture drawers the comparison here that, ‘not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like these” I can’t help wonder the comparison being drawn out here is that of between self-sufficiency and full dependance on God.
In conclusion, so then we might worry, but we can replace worry with either one of two things:
- Become self-sufficient and provide for ourselves.
- Fill our life with things that hide our worry.
Instead we have to look to the Lord, to fill our lives to meditate on his precepts day and night rather than be concerned with how to provide for ourselves. Instead of worry look up to what the Lord is doing, think about those things that lift you up rather than dwelling on today’s problems!
Lord I’m sorry when through my self-sufficiency I’ve forgotten what it is to fully rely on you. Help me not to rely on
things to fill that need of comfort, support but instead to look to you and grow daily in dependance on the Lord. Amen.
